gear reducer replacement checklist

Gear reducer replacement checklist: ratio, torque, shafts, and mounting

A source-backed gearbox and speed-reducer replacement workflow covering ratio, torque, shaft geometry, mounting, orientation, accessories, and lubrication.

Short answer.A reducer with the same nominal ratio is not automatically interchangeable. Start with the complete nameplate and application, then verify actual ratio, output speed, torque and service factor, input and output interfaces, mounting geometry, shaft orientation, accessories, lubrication, and thermal or environmental requirements.
Work the problem in this order01

1. Preserve the reducer identity

Photograph the complete reducer nameplate, housing, input and output sides, mounting, motor or coupling, torque arm, backstop, and accessories. Record manufacturer, family, size, complete model, ratio, serial or order number, and mounting position.

2. Confirm ratio and output duty

Use current manufacturer documentation to distinguish nominal from actual ratio where applicable. Record input speed, required output speed, continuous and peak torque, service factor, starts, reversals, and shock loading before comparing a candidate.

3. Measure the mechanical interfaces

Record input shaft or motor-adapter details, output shaft or hollow-bore size, key or bushing system, center distance, mounting-hole pattern, torque-arm geometry, flange or feet, and available envelope.

4. Capture configured options

Identify backstop, brake, fan, breather, shrink disc, taper bushing, hollow shaft, motor mount, guards, seals, special coatings, and lubrication arrangement. These options can change fit, rotation, service, or installation requirements.

5. Verify the complete candidate

Compare the proposed reducer against the manufacturer's current catalog, drawing, selection tool, and instruction manual. Keep any mismatch visible and require engineering or supplier confirmation when the original duty, configuration, or source evidence is incomplete.

Replacement checks02
✓Complete manufacturer, family, size, model, serial or order number, and mounting position
✓Actual ratio, input speed, output speed, continuous and peak torque, and service factor
✓Input interface, output shaft or bore, key or bushing, rotation, and shaft orientation
✓Foot, flange, torque-arm, center-distance, bolt-pattern, and envelope dimensions
✓Backstop, brake, motor adapter, lubrication, seals, cooling, environment, and other configured options
Common failure modes03
!Selecting from nominal ratio alone
!Assuming the same reducer size has the same actual ratio or shaft geometry
!Ignoring backstop direction, mounting position, lubrication, or configured accessories
!Calling a dimensionally similar reducer a drop-in replacement without checking torque and duty
