Dryer lint screen care: remove lint and wash off residue safely
Whirlpool says to remove lint from the screen after every load without rinsing it, because wet lint is hard to remove. Detergent and fabric-softener residue can also clog mesh; Whirlpool recommends a nylon-brush wash about every six months or sooner if clogged, then a thorough rinse and complete drying before reinstalling. Follow your exact dryer manual because screen construction differs.
Safety boundary
- Never run the dryer with its lint screen missing, wet, damaged, or loosely installed.
- Confirm the exact screen is washable in the model manual; do not apply this cleaning method to a different filter design without manufacturer guidance.
- Do not use sharp tools or open the dryer cabinet.
Procedure
- After each load, remove dry lint
Pull the screen straight up if that matches your model, roll lint off with your fingers, and reinstall it securely. Whirlpool says not to rinse the screen for routine lint removal because wet lint is harder to remove.
- Look for residue, not just loose lint
If lint falls off while the screen is installed or drying takes longer, detergent or softener residue may be coating the mesh. Check the manual to confirm the screen can be washed.
- Wash the compatible screen
For the cited Whirlpool design, use hot water and liquid detergent with a nylon brush, rinse thoroughly, and dry fully with a clean towel before reinstalling. Whirlpool suggests about every six months or more often if residue clogs the screen.
- Gently clear the screen cavity
If lint has accumulated around the screen, Whirlpool says to remove it gently with a vacuum attachment. Do not force tools into the exhaust or internal dryer.
Daily lint removal
Whirlpool says to remove loose lint after each load and not rinse the screen for that routine step because wet lint is difficult to remove. Seat the screen firmly before operating the dryer.
A screen can look clear while product residue remains on the mesh. Whirlpool notes detergent and fabric-softener residue can slow drying and recommends periodic deep cleaning for its applicable screen designs.
Periodic mesh cleaning
For the Whirlpool instructions cited here, scrub both sides with hot water and a nylon brush using liquid detergent, rinse, and dry thoroughly before reinstalling. Whirlpool's suggested interval is about every six months or more often if it becomes clogged; the model manual takes precedence.
If long drying continues after the screen is clean, investigate the exhaust path using the separate airflow guide or request qualified service.
