Dryer auto cycle ends early: small loads and sensor residue
LG says very small loads may not brush its front moisture sensors reliably and residue on those sensors can interfere with load detection, causing a cycle to end early. LG suggests adding a few items or choosing Speed Dry or Timed Dry for a small load and cleaning the sensors as described for the exact model. Persistent shutdowns or error codes need model-specific support.
Safety boundary
- Stop the dryer before cleaning; use only model-manual-approved sensor cleaning steps.
- Do not remove panels, touch wiring, or bypass sensor or door safety features.
- Follow garment care labels and the dryer manual when selecting heat or timed cycles.
Symptoms this path covers
- An automatic cycle ends while clothes are damp
- Time estimate drops sharply on a very small load
- Dryer repeatedly stops before clothes feel dry
Diagnostic sequence
- Determine whether the load is very small
LG says a very small load may not contact its front moisture sensors. For the cited LG guidance, add a few suitable items or use Speed Dry/Timed Dry when appropriate; cycle names vary by model.
Stop when: The selected cycle is incompatible with the fabric care label or the exact manual. - Clean accessible sensor surfaces per manual
Residue can interfere with sensing. Locate the moisture sensors only as shown in the exact model manual and clean them using the specified method; do not scrape or disassemble the dryer.
- Separate early-stop from airflow or heat faults
If the dryer also takes unusually long, shows an airflow code, or does not heat, use the model's vent/heat troubleshooting path. These symptoms may have a different cause than small-load sensing.
- Arrange service for recurring shutdowns
If a normal-size load still ends early after manual-directed sensor care, or the unit displays a code, request manufacturer service.
Why a small load can confuse an auto cycle
LG says very small loads may not brush its front moisture sensors enough for the dryer to detect the load reliably. It suggests adding a few items or choosing Speed Dry or Timed Dry in the cases described by its support guidance.
A sensor surface with residue may also interfere with detection. Use the model manual to find and clean the sensor; do not generalize sensor location or cleaning materials across dryer models.
Check for a different fault
An early end on a tiny load is not the same diagnosis as restricted airflow or a no-heat condition. If the dryer also reports an airflow code, dries slowly, or fails to heat, follow the separate model-specific help path.
Repeated early stops on ordinary loads, warning codes, or shutdowns that continue after manual-directed sensor care warrant manufacturer service.
